Mantras & Power Phrases


"Mantra" (/ˈmæntrə, ˈmɑːn-, ˈmʌn-/ (Sanskrit: मंत्र);) means a sacred utterance, numinous sound, or a syllable, word, phonemes, or group of words believed by some to have psychological and spiritual power in Sanskrit.


There’s no need to go all Buddha here. Mantras are basically just positive self talk spoken in fragmented, motivational phrases. Actually, you don’t even have to speak them out loud; just thinking these words can be powerful motivators.

Why have a (or many) Mantra?

As an active person, you have higher demands of your self! You’re hitting the gym, the pavement, the trail, waking up early, sweating more, setting goals, watching your diet, loading up on veggies, and passing on dessert… etc etc etc… That’s a lot to ask of yourself, but of course, worth it!

So whats a mantra have to do with it? Well we all hit a moment when we want to stop. When pain, fatigue, nerves, doubt, or hectic pace of life gets to be too much. This is a natural part of getting strong, faster, fitter, healthier and reaching your goals! So you need to P U S H through. “ P U S H” being a mantra on its own. Repeat it in your head ‘push through, push through, push through’. How do you feel now? Inspired to keep it up right?!   And there you have it; the reason mantras help. They motivate and inspire us to keep going. They remind us that we want this and we can get it.

How to pick a Mantra

Choose a statement that matters to you.

Keep it short, no need to quote a book here, a 1-4 words will do.

How to apply a Mantra

Write it down, tape it to your fridge, keep it in your gym bag or save it to your phone.

Repeat it often in difficult situations.

Have different power statements for different situations.

Mantras aren’t only for working out! Use them to invite motivation, calm and positivity into any situation.

Obviously I like to keep it short and simple and focus on keeping the energy going.


I also really like to listen to music that have mantra-like lyrics. Britney’s ‘Work’ or Kanye’s ‘Stronger’ or Taylor’s ‘Shake it Off’ while I’m working out because the messages give me a much needed boost.
